The Employees’ Compensation Commission (ECC) has once again partnered with several workers’ organizations and labor unions in Eastern Visayas for the conduct of Employees’ Compensation Program (ECP) advocacy seminars in Leyte and Samar.

ECC Regional Officer Michelle Basal took the lead in orienting companies in the said areas such as the Samar Electric Cooperative in Paranas, PASAR Corporation in Isabel, Leyte, PEPSI Cola in Tacloban City, Leyte Agri-Corporation in Ormoc City and the Southern Leyte Electric Cooperative in Maasin City. The series of lectures were aimed at increasing awareness regarding the ECP while at the same time putting importance on Basic Occupational Safety and Health (BOSH).

Basal, a BOSH graduate also discussed some common hazards in the workplace and the ways and means to reduce, if not eliminate, their harmful effects.

“The employer has the responsibility to comply with the prevailing safety and health laws and to take the necessary precautions for the prevention of disability or death in the workplace,” Basal highlighted during her talk.

According to Basal, in the event that an employee get injured or dies due to the failure of the employer to comply with the safety devices requirement, a penalty will be charged to the employer.

“We are reaching out to different stakeholders not only to promote awareness regarding the Employees’ Compensation Program but, at the same time, encourage safety and health in the workplace. Our aim is to raise the consciousness that safety and employee welfare should always go hand in hand. At the end of the day, we all want to have a productive and healthy workforce,” said ECC Director Stella-Zipagan Banawis.
