The Employees’ Compensation Commission (ECC), an attached agency of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), headed by Executive Director Evelyn P. Florendo-Tablang,   helps occupationally-disabled workers (ODWs) rebuild their lives  through its program,  Katulong at Gabay sa Manggagawang may Kapansanan (KaGabay)  or Balik-Hanapbuhay.

The KaGabay Program is a special economic assistance program launched by the ECC for ODWs who lost employment by reason of work-related sickness or injury.  The program has three components, namely, physical restoration which aims to restore the physical and functional capacity of the ODWs through physical and occupational therapy, skills training for re-employment, and   entrepreneurial training for small home-based business.

One KaGabay grantee is Joel Maglangit.  He used to work at Eagle Watch Security Agency as a security guard.  Unfortunately, he lost his leg in a vehicular accident while on his way to work.  Because of his disability, he had to stop working.

The ECC  financed Maglangit’s  physical therapy at the Philippine General Hospital.  He then underwent electromyography-nerve conduction (EMT), a requirement preparatory to being fitted with   an artificial leg to aid his mobility and enable him to regain his self-esteem.

To provide Maglangit with livelihood, the ECC-KaGabay funded his entrepreneurial training  on laundry/dishwashing & fabric conditioner.  The ECC also provided him  with a starter kit to start him off on his  laundry business  and make a decent  living  for his family despite his  work-related disability.

The ECC’s Employees’ Compensation Program provides income, medical and related benefits and services to public and private sector workers in the event of work-related sickness, injuries or death.
