Following the 6.5 magnitude earthquake in Leyte on July 6, 2017, the Employees’ Compensation Commission (ECC), in coordination with the Department of Labor and Employment Regional Office Eight, has conducted a quick response visit to affected workers in Kananga and Ormoc City.
The earthquake caused a commercial building to collapse and this caused severe injuries to Dulia Monares, an attendant/helper in one of the offices inside the collapsed building.
The Quick Response Team proceeded to Ormoc Doctor’s Hospital where Monares was recuperating. Medical evaluation showed that Monares sustained left leg injuries which resulted in amputation, minor cuts, and wounds on both arms and laceration of the back, head and stomach.
The ECC Quick Response Team conducted psychosocial counseling and informed Monares and her immediate family members of her benefits under the Employees’ Compensation Program, as she was a victim of a work-related accident. They were also informed of the process of filing for an EC claim.
As an initial intervention, ECC has given grocery items to the family and has committed to assist them on their EC claim application.
