In a heartening display of support for individuals affected by work-related disabilities, the Employees’ Compensation Commission (ECC) through its Regional Extension Unit has recently awarded livelihood assistance to Eduardo Alcantara Jr. and Richard Hidalgo from Agoo and Naguilian in La Union, respectively who sustained injuries because of their work.
Alcantara, 34, production staff, suffered an amputation of his right thumb after a machine had eaten his finger while performing his duties on November 7, 2023. On the other hand, Hidalgo, 47, seafarer, suffered a back injury due to a falling incident that happened while onboard on February 27, 2023. Despite the challenges posed by their condition, Alcantara and Hidalgo remained determined to regain their independence and provide for their family.
“ECC facilitated the grant of livelihood assistance amounting to Php 20,000.00 each as part of our commitment to aid workers affected by occupational hazards. Our support does not end in the grant of livelihood assistance but also includes the grant of assistive devices like orthoses to persons with work-related disability (PWRD), particularly to Hidalgo.”
“In addition, Hidalgo underwent free physical therapy sessions with our hospital partner,” ECC Regional Officer Dr. Angelo Ponciano said.
“This assistance from ECC is a lifeline for me and my family,” said Alcantara who preferred to put up a sari-sari store.
“It gives me hope and a chance to rebuild my life despite the challenges I faced,” Hidalgo said, as he started his rice retailing business in their area.
The ECC’s support underscores its mandate to provide comprehensive benefits and services to workers who suffer work-related injuries or illnesses which resulted to disability. Through various programs, including rehabilitation services and livelihood assistance, the ECC aims to empower affected workers to reintegrate into the workforce and regain economic stability.
“Our goal is to ensure that persons with work-related disabilities (PWRDs) receive the support they need to lead productive lives despite their disabilities,” said ECC Executive Director Kaima Via Velasquez.
ECC encourages all eligible workers who have experienced work-related sickness or injuries to avail EC Program benefits and services. These include sickness benefits, medical benefits, carer’s allowance, and rehabilitation services designed to facilitate PWRDs recovery and reintegration into society.
