Valenzuela City—With the unwavering support of the Employees’ Compensation Commission (ECC), Jorge S. Ong, a 52-year-old former fitter at a shipping company has turned a workplace accident into a story of resilience and new beginnings.

In September 2022, Ong suffered a serious fall inside the engine room while onboard a vessel, resulting in multiple spinal injuries, including cervical and lumbar disc herniation. The accident left him unable to continue his work, but despite the challenges, he remained determined to recover and rebuild his life.

Ong received financial assistance, including P10,000 in cash aid from ECC, alongside his SSS benefits. He also underwent livelihood training where he received transportation and meal allowance. Thereafter, he was awarded a P20,000 starter kit to help him start his own business. This support paved the way for him to open his very own Tapsihan in April 2024, right in his garage.

With ECC’s support, Ong now successfully manages his “tapsihan”, using social media to attract customers and even adding a videoke feature for a more enjoyable dining experience.

As he looks forward to growing his business, Ong serves as an inspiration to other workers facing similar challenges. His story is a testament to ECC’s continued commitment to helping injured workers regain their livelihood and rebuild their future.
