The Employees’ Compensation Commission (ECC) awarded cash assistance benefit of ₱15,000.00 to the mother of the late Sergeant Jonathan C. Gabuya who was killed-in-action (KIA) during the AFP operation last December 2017 in Davao Oriental.
Sgt. Gabuya was a uniformed personnel of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) for 10 years. He was assigned in Brgy. Tubaon, Davao Oriental for an army operation where he was caught in a landmine explosion that caused him to suffer serious head injury.
Asteria Gabuya, mother of Sgt. Gabuya, said that her son died in the intensive care unit of a hospital in Davao City on January 2018 at age 34.
Gabuya is 66 years old and a full-time housewife residing in Purok Maligaya, Brgy. Kablon, Tupi, South Cotabato. Moreover, she is entitled to receive ECC survivorship pension for 5 years through the Government Security Insurance System (GSIS), as the direct beneficiary of Sgt. Gabuya.
“Madamo gid nga salamat sa paghatag sang assistance. Bisag sakit na wala na siya, padayon gihapon mi sa pagpangabuhi nga maayo. Ug salamat sa inyong paghatag pasidungog sa mga sundalo nga nagtaliwan sama sa akong anak,”
(“We are very grateful for the assistance. Amidst the pain of losing him [Sgt. Gabuya], we continue to live well. And thank you for giving honor to the fallen soldiers just like my son”), said Gabuya.
Uniformed personnel who are wounded in action and beneficiaries of those killed in action are entitled to benefits under the Employees’ Compensation Program (ECP). Aside from the cash benefits of ₱10,000.00 (WIA) and ₱15,000.00 (KIA), the beneficiaries of those KIA can receive a funeral benefit of ₱30,000.00 and a monthly pension from ECC through the GSIS. The GSIS, along with the SSS, are the administering agencies of ECC.
ECC is a government corporation attached to the Department of Labor and Employment that provides a package of benefits for public and private sector employees and their dependents in the event of work-connected contingencies such as sickness, injury, disability or death.
