General Santos City – “Sobrang laki ng tulong ng ECC sa akin. Masuportahan ko na ang pamilya ko,” said Jimboy Delarama, who became physically disabled due to a work-connected accident in August 2019.

Delarama, 27 years old and a resident of Brgy. Calumpang, General Santos City, was working as an assistant feeder operator in a packaging company in Davao City. While working, he accidentally tripped and caused his right arm to get caught in-between spinning feedroll which resulted to the amputation of his right arm.

In 2019, Delarama filed an Employees’ Compensation (EC) disability claim at SSS-Toril Branch. Upon evaluation, he was granted an EC Permanent Partial Disability (PPD) benefits amounting to ₱36,000.00.

Moreover, the Employees’ Compensation Commission (ECC), through its Extension Unit in Region 12, granted Delarama a livelihood starter kit amounting to ₱20,000.00 that helped him start-up a sari-sari store business in August 2020; a cash assistance worth ₱ 10,000.00 was also given. He will also receive an arm prosthesis for his amputated right arm under the EC – Katulong at Gabay sa Manggagawang may Kapansanan (KaGabay) Program.

Executive Director Stella Z. Banawis said that one of the goals of ECC is to help persons with work-related disabilities (PWRDs) to recover from the work-related contingencies they encounter through physical restoration, skills training, and self-entrepreneurship.

The Employees’ Compensation Commission is a government corporation attached to the Department of Labor and Employment for policy formulation and program coordination. The ECC is mandated to provide meaningful and appropriate compensation benefits to workers and their dependents in the event of work-related sickness, injury, disability or death.
